TITLE
Basic Aspects and Modeling of Friction in Cutting

ABSTRACT
Theoretical research on machining is aimed to assess an analytical model able to predict machining behavior without having to perform machining experiments. In the last two decades the use of numerical techniques and in particular of the Finite Element Method has been proposed for this purpose. However, even the simplest case of simulation of orthogonal cutting presents several important difficulties, among which material characterisation at high temperature and strain rate, frictional conditions at the tool-chip interface and chip separation criteria are probably the most relevant. In the paper some basic aspects about friction modelling in machining are taken into account: the process of orthogonal cutting of mild steel specimens was simulated utilising several different friction models, whose effectiveness was investigated through the comparison among the numerical predictions and a set of experimental results.
