Validation of the Cockcroft and Latham Fracture Criterion for Cold Heading of Steel Fasteners
A Drop Weight Compression Test was developed to obtain fracture on the
equatorial surface of cylindrical specimens under conditions representative of cold heading
operations. The results presented in this paper illustrate that the test is sensitive to chemical
composition and microstructure. A commercial finite element method software package,
Forge2, was used to simulate the upsetting of steel test specimens with aspect ratios of 1.0,
1.3 and 1.6. The results demonstrate the validity of the Cockcroft and Latham fracture
criterion as it applies to upsetting in cold heading of Grade 1038 steel fasteners.
