Development of an Analytical Model for the Evaluation of Friction Coefficient in Cold Forming
This research focuses on the study of friction phenomena between two surfaces (workpiece and die) in cold forming operation and aims to identify an analytical description of the friction coefficient ? as a function of the process parameters, piece and die roughness and material characteristics by means of experimental campaigns and simulative models. The experiments were run using a Pin-on-Disk equipment. The experimental results were used to validate the simulative model where the micro-geometries of the parts were taken into account. Both experiments and simulation results were used for the development of an analytical model of the actual contact phenomenon. The final goal is to implement the identified friction function in a finite element code in order to calculate the friction coefficient value as a function of the local pressure and of the relative sliding velocity.
