TITLE
Spurious Wrinkles in Forming Simulations of Woven Fabric

ABSTRACT
Following the recent identification of a new type of numerical locking for shell elements, namely intra-ply shear locking, this paper reports further studies on forming simulations of woven fabric. In light of the proposed locking mechanism, simulation cases were designed for both diaphragm forming and stamping processes, to comprehensively illustrate the relationships between mesh orientations and spurious wrinkles. The simulations were performed using a commercial finite element package, following a common approach, in which the fabrics were modelled by shell elements. The non-orthogonal evolution of fibre orientations was traced, and the intra-ply shearing was described by a single parameter at each element. This paper confirms the proposed locking mechanism, and demonstrates that spurious wrinkles, with other simulation errors, could be easily introduced with arbitrarily oriented meshes. These can be effectively eliminated by adopting the proposed aligned mesh technology.
