TITLE
Mechanism of Foaming during Rotational Moulding

ABSTRACT
This work concerns the production of foamed polyethylene parts by rotational moulding and aims at acquiring information for modelling the foaming phenomenon. A qualitative study of the bubble growth in the polymeric matrix has been undertaken using a thermo-optical microscope equipped with a video system. This study was supplemented by a kinetic analysis of the foaming agent (azodicarbonamide) decomposition. A first-order kinetic model was proposed to simulate the weight loss of foaming agent. The model then has been compared with experimental results obtained by thermogravimetry. Bubble radius variation in molten matrix, then, was studied with a mathematical approach in order to explain the mechanism of foaming agent decomposition in the context of rotational moulding.
