TITLE
Interaction of Initial and Newly Born Damage in Fatigue Crack Growth and Structural Integrity

ABSTRACT
A model of fatigue crack growth is developed taking into account the processinginduced defects in structural components. The defects are schematised in the framework of continuum damage mechanics as non-zero initial conditions. Both near-surface and stripwise initial damage fields are considered. The final results are presented in the form of the histories of damage accumulation and crack growth as well as of the crack growth rate diagrams. The latter cover all the stages of fatigue crack growth including the initial nearthreshold stage, the middle stage of stable growth, and the terminal stage before the final fracture. The parameters of fatigue crack growth rate diagrams are interpreted in the terms of continuum damage mechanics. The effect of initial damage on the cycle numbers till the start of crack growth and on the total fatigue life is discussed.
