TITLE
Experimental Investigation and Prediction of Frictional Responses in the Orthogonal Cutting Process

ABSTRACT
This paper examines the frictional behaviour of coated cemented carbide tool inserts during continuous dry end turning of steel workpieces. A brief review of the machining innovations leading either directly or indirectly to a reduction of friction at the tool-chip interface is presented. An experimental program was designed in order to evaluate fundamental tribo-contact characteristics such as the friction force, the contact stresses, the coefficient of friction and the friction power density under a wide range of cutting conditions. Results show significantly different friction behaviour of multilayered coatings with an intermediate layer of Al2O3 resulting in a consistent decrease in the contact temperature and increasing transfer of the generated heat into the chip. Such information about the process performance can assist manufacturing engineers in the selection of appropriate tool and machining conditions, and contribute to the improvement of coating materials.
