Pressure Distribution on the Tool Rake Face in Orthogonal Cutting Prediction and Measurement
The simulation of the machining process is assuming, nowadays, a relevant importance since several information concerning the process performance and the evolution of some process variables may be estimated using different finite element codes. Nevertheless, the reliability of these numerical procedures is not yet sufficiently verified. In this paper an experimental approach to measure the pressure distribution on the rake face of the tool during orthogonal cutting of Aluminium Alloy specimens is proposed. The measured load distribution was compared with a predicted one obtained using a finite element implicit code. A good agreement was found out for both the pressure peak and the load distribution. Such circumstance confirms that numerical codes may effectively assist the process designer if an accurate set-up of simulation parameters is selected.
