TITLE
Casting of Shape Strip from Molten Metal and Semi-Solid Slurry by Use of Roll Caster and Belt Caster

ABSTRACT
Casting of shape strips directly from molten metal was attempted. The shape strips, which had hole or edges that had some shape, were cast by use of a roll caster or a belt-roll caster. Heat transfer between a roll (or a belt) and melt was controlled in order to cast the shape strip. In the roll caster, heat transfer was suppressed by insulator paper, which was attached on the roll. In the belt-roll caster, the belt, which had holes, was used in order to cast a strip that had holes. The molten metal was not solidified at the position of the hole. Insulator paper was attached to the roll, and a steel belt was hung on the insulator paper. Heat transfer was suppressed by the insulator at the hole of the steel belt. A small roll and semisolid casting were employed in order to improve the upper surface of the shape strip. An aluminium alloy roll of 250mm diameter was used. Thickness of the mild steel belt was 0.8mm. Al-Si alloy was used. Casting speed ranged from 5 m/min to 30 m/min. Strip thickness was 1mm to 3mm.
